Hello there! Yes, you read it right. We went to see the sand dunes in Melbourne and it was beautiful.
Wilson’s Promontory is mainly known for camping. Since I am not a camping person, we decided to make a quick 2-day trip and see the best things this place had to offer. Wilson’s Prom is about 220 km from Melbourne. En route, you will find a very cute dairy farm – Caldermeade dairy farm. It is a fully functional commercial dairy farm and you also get a visitors tour around the place. We stopped here for a quick snack break and enjoyed fresh milkshakes and the only available vegetarian option for food – Fries. Since we got our lunch times mixed up, we ended up skipping lunch and went straight to our lodgings – The Fish Creek Hotel. This is located in a town close to the Wilson’s Promontory and has a nice charming feel about it if you exclude the fact that this hotel was haunted by ghosts in the early 1900s!
After checking in we decided to explore a place close by and went to the Big Drift. This is located near the Stockyard campsite of Wilson’s Prom National Park. A 2 km walk and a small hike will land you in the most scenic sand dunes. The hike is quite easy (except for a small stretch which is steep). Not quite a touristy spot yet, that gives you the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent dunes to yourselves. Leaving footprints on the sand, walking from one ridge to the other with the wind erasing your tracks just in time to lose yourself in the dunes again (what more do you want? Eh?)
This is the perfect spot to hike up with friends and family and enjoy some quality time with each other. We also saw a few adrenaline seekers getting ready to do some sand surfing. We visited the place quite late but ended up just in time to catch one of the most beautiful sunsets I have seen. One tip I would give is to start the descent before dark because you will have to walk in the bushlands and I freaked out multiple times imagining snakes gliding up next to us in the path!

Looking forward to sharing more experiences from Melbourne soon.
Until then…
